Other ways to dispose of bulky waste

Large bulky items in good condition can sometimes be passed on for reuse or recycling. This includes:

  • Beds
  • Sofas
  • Electrical appliances, for example fridges

Should this item be donated?

Before passing on an item consider if:

  • The item has been stored indoors or undercover
  • It is an electrical appliance, is it fully working
  • It is an upholstered item, does it have a red or blue fire label attached
  • You would buy or take this item

Who can I donate to?

Some charities may accept items meeting these points. A small charge may be made for collection, but some are free:

Anglo Doorstep Collections offer free doorstep collections for unwanted household items, including small electricals and clothing/footwear.

We are working with Anglo Doorstep Collections to collect unwanted clothes, shoes, books and various household items e.g. small electricals, PC’s and accessories, microwaves, and crockery.

The full list of items Anglo can collect.

This is a simple, free and convenient way to declutter your belongings, while supporting a charity.

Collections will only be made once you have made a booking and every donation is reused for its original intended use.

You can make a booking here.

The Anglo service is not suitable for large bulky items.

Another option is to offer your items online for free via Gumtree, Freecycle, Freegle or Preloved.

Supermarket notice boards or newspapers are other options.

If none of these ideas are practical or appropriate please use our paid-for bulky waste collection service or you can dispose of bulky items for free at the Southampton tip/dump.
