School and college travel information for families

Latest update – 19 September 2025

The School Travel Service is currently experiencing a shortage of available Passenger Assistants which may impact your Child’s School Transport provision. We are actively working to recruit additional Passenger Assistants to minimise the impact on School Travel arrangements. If you have been affected by a School Transport issue for the start of this term and have incurred costs, you may be able to claim travel costs and you can do so using this form.

If you would like to get in touch to discuss reimbursement or school travel support for a child or young person, please use our online form.

Post-16 Transport: We are aiming to have transport arrangements in place as soon as possible. However, due to the timing of GCSE results and colleges finalising their timetables, there may be a delay. Transport will be available by early October, but we will try to get it in place sooner, where possible. Parents, carers, and young people may need to make their own arrangements in September. You can claim mileage by using this form.

How will your child get to school?

When choosing a school place, it is important to think about how your child, student or adult learner will travel to and from school each day. Most families organise their own home to school journey, like walking, cycling, using public transport or lift-sharing with other families.

However, we have a duty to support children, students or adult learners with their school journey, providing they meet specific criteria for this support.

Guidance and helpful reminders

Remember: Assessment for travel assistance will be determined once a school place has been allocated by Southampton City Council at a suitable school. Means tested applicants and those applying under exceptional circumstances need to apply before the start of each new school year.
