Exclusions and suspensions
Suspension and permanent exclusion are actions schools may make in response to pupil misbehaviour.
A suspension is where a pupil is temporarily removed from school for a fixed period of time.
A permanent exclusion is where a pupil is removed permanently from the school.
In both instances, it is important that the pupil continues to access education, either through:
- Work provided by the school for the first five days of suspension or exclusion
- Alternative provision from the sixth day of suspension or exclusion
Only a headteacher or principal can make the decision to suspend or permanently exclude a pupil. Their decision is subject to review by their governing body, who have the right to reinstate a pupil.
Suspensions and permanent exclusions must be formally recorded. They also must be communicated in writing to parents. If a school asks a pupil not to attend school without a formal suspension or permanent exclusion, this would be an unlawful exclusion.
Suspension and permanent exclusion are serious sanctions. They should be used infrequently, in response to significant or persistent breaches of the school’s behaviour policy.
Schools should notify us of any suspensions and exclusions using our contact form.
