Neurodiversity and neurodevelopmental traits are not mental health conditions. They highlight the natural differences in how our brains work and how we think and learn. It’s important to celebrate neurodiversity and focus on how each person sees the world.

Masking is when neurodivergent individuals hide their true behaviours to fit in. This can involve copying neurotypical behaviours, often feeling unnatural. Masking can lead to stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Understanding this idea helps create a more inclusive space. It allows neurodivergent people to be themselves and lowers the chances of misdiagnosis.

Scripting means repeating pre-planned lines or phrases from movies, books, or conversations. It helps neurodivergent individuals communicate effectively using language they are comfortable with. Scripting can help reduce anxiety in social situations. It can assist in learning social norms and language.

Southampton City Council focuses on a needs-led approach instead of a diagnosis-led one. This means providing tailored support for children and their families. A multidisciplinary team will be available as needed. We want everyone’s voice—children, parents, carers, and professionals—to be heard.

In the short term, we aim to identify specific strengths and areas needing support. We will develop targeted strategies and interventions with clear goals. These will be reviewed to determine their effectiveness and whether adjustments are needed.

Long-term, a consistent assess, plan, do, review process will be repeated from 0-19 years. This approach will promote growth in academics, social skills, emotional health, and career interests.

Stimming refers to repetitive movements or actions. Stimming is a way to self-regulate and relieve anxiety.

What does it look like?

Stimming can include behaviours like hand flapping, rocking, spinning, or tapping objects. These actions provide calming sensory feedback, helping individuals focus or feel better. Stimming is a natural coping method for neurodiverse individuals.

Nutrition can affect neurodiverse individuals. It influences cognitive function, behaviour, emotional control, and mental health. When using the NDPT, we will consider how nutrition impacts these areas. Neurodiverse individuals may show selective eating behaviours due to sensory sensitivities or routines. Understanding these factors is key when supporting dietary choices and improving eating experiences. If you have concerns, always consult a doctor or healthcare professional.

Sleep is vital for everyone’s health, especially for neurodiverse individuals. They may experience various sleep challenges. Many have sensitivities to noise, light, or touch, making it hard to sleep comfortably. Some may have irregular sleep patterns. Research shows that melatonin levels can also affect sleep. Addressing sleep issues can greatly improve well-being. This may involve creating a calm environment, maintaining a regular bedtime routine, and seeking advice from professionals when necessary.
