SEMH Graduated Approach - online guide

What is the Online Analysis Tool?

This Online Analysis Tool is a resource for education settings to use to provide them with information on how to use the Graduated Approach to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Difficulties.

The Online Analysis Tool will support settings with identifying areas of strength in their current practice and areas of development. It is hoped that this tool will support settings with ideas of best practice and direction for where to focus for further research and development.

How should the Tool and the results be used?

The Online Analysis Tool results are to be used as informal guidance for school settings. The results are not part of a formalised process and are not intended to be used as a judgement tool.

Since this is also a tool to support professional development and understanding of good practice, it can be accessed by any educational professional, at any stage of the Academic Year. It can be completed multiple times as a result.

The results of the analysis tool remain with the person completing the tool for their own use as guidance for where to focus for further research and development.

The Online Analysis Tool is to be used in conjunction with SEMH Graduated Approach online guide. This guide provides details about best practice, further reading opportunities and services who may be able to support relating to all stages of the Graduated Approach.

How was the Tool funded and developed?

The SEMH Graduated Approach Online Analysis Tool and Online Guide has been funded from the Developing Better Value for SEND Program. The Online Analysis Tool was developed from representatives from the following teams:

  • Southampton Inclusion Partnership
  • Southampton City Council SEND and Inclusion team
  • Educational Psychology Team

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and the links will be routinely reviewed and updated. The links are for professional’s convenience and are not an endorsement of the service or resource. Please refer to Southampton City Council’s disclaimer for full details of this.

Please also refer to Southampton City Council’s Ordinarily Available Provision Guidance which aims to support schools to deliver on the inclusion strategy by setting clear expectations of what all schools should be providing and the support and guidance that the Local Authority will provide to enable schools to deliver on these expectations.

The active engagement of the parent/carer is an essential resource in developing all individual plans.
