Health services for children with SEND

Children's hearing services see children from birth to 18 years of age for the assessment and management of hearing loss.

All children are different and develop at different speeds. Some children find learning certain skills more difficult than others and they may need specialist assessment and advice from one of our therapists. Our children's therapy services include physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy.

The role of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) West is to provide a comprehensive specialist mental health service to children and young people aged 5-18 years and who are registered with a Southampton City GP.

We are here to help children and young people who are struggling with their emotional and mental health including eating disorders and whose difficulties are having a significant impact on their ability to participate in daily activities or keep themselves safe.

The Children's Continence Service sees children from the age of 2-16 with soiling, constipation, day wetting and night wetting. They also support children with additional needs with toileting support.

Provision of containments products is also provided for those children with additional needs from the age of 4 years that are eligible.

If you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under 4, you may be entitled to get help to buy healthy food and milk.

With the modern age of social media, online gaming and streaming, it’s become increasingly difficult to monitor use of the internet and games/platforms and keeping our children and young people safe online.

Technology can move at an extraordinarily fast pace and it can be difficult to know how to start talking to your child about what they’re doing online, who they might be speaking to or discussing the potential risks and issues.

Talking regularly with your child is the greatest tool to help keep them safe online. Talking regularly and making it part of daily conversation, like you would about their day at school, will help your child feel relaxed. It also means when they do have any worries, they’re more likely to come and speak to you.

But it can also be easy to become overwhelmed with the different technology, the language that children use, the huge number of games and apps which are available and the potential risks.

Southampton Parent Carer Forum recently held a workshop with the Police to highlight the dangers and this session was extremely well received. The police offered some fantastic guidance and advice and shared some really useful information about keeping children and young people safe online.

The Forum will be running regular sessions with the police on this subject and other useful subjects, join the mailing list to keep updated as to when the sessions will be taking place.

The Health team assess and complete specialist interventions on the following health needs: epilepsy, challenging behaviour, mental health, complex physical health, forensic and autism.

The Adult Services Learning Disability team assess what support you need at home and in the community. They will help you find the right to place to live, get respite, and keep safe.
