Routes into teaching
Change the lives of young people by becoming a qualified primary or secondary teacher on one of the University of Southampton Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) courses. You can choose from eight national curriculum subjects.
University of Southampton provides a first-class route into teaching and has been recognised as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted.
Taught at Master’s level, the PGCE + QTS programme includes:
- Practical experience through placements in two regional partnership schools across Southampton, Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire
- Theoretical and practical training led by subject-specialist university tutors, all of whom are experienced teachers
- Teaching that is informed by the latest pedagogical research and draws on expertise from one of the UK’s top university Schools of Education and its partner schools
If you have an undergraduate degree and are interested in becoming a teacher in secondary education, you can apply to study a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Southampton to achieve a Masters level PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will undertake teaching placements in City schools/colleges and be mentored by professionals within those institutions, providing an excellent opportunity to learn all about what Southampton schools and colleges have to offer. Alternatively, the Bitterne Park Teacher Training Alliance provides a school-led teacher training programme. This programme allows trainees to follow a school-led programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), validated by the University of Winchester.
