Scheduled monuments

Southampton's sixty scheduled monuments include the town walls, numerous medieval vaults and cellars, the Tudor House Museum and the Roman remains at Bitterne Manor.

Any work which may affect a scheduled monument or its setting requires Scheduled Monument Consent from the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. It is an offence to damage or cause damage to a scheduled monument, punishable by a heavy fine. This includes spraying graffiti, use of metal detectors, and physical damage to the structure.

Further information on scheduled monuments and on applying for Scheduled Monument Consent is available from Historic England.

For advice on ground and building works in the vicinity of scheduled monuments, and on obtaining Scheduled Monument Consent, contact planning online.

The council owns most scheduled monuments in the city and is responsible for their upkeep and maintenance. For matters relating to scheduled monuments owned by the council, contact Andy Russel on 023 8063 4906, archaeology@southampton.gov.uk
