Scheduled monuments

Southampton's sixty scheduled monuments include the town walls, numerous medieval vaults and cellars, the Tudor House Museum and the Roman remains at Bitterne Manor.

Any work which may affect a scheduled monument or its setting requires Scheduled Monument Consent from the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. It is an offence to damage or cause damage to a scheduled monument, punishable by a heavy fine. This includes spraying graffiti, use of metal detectors, and physical damage to the structure.
