Parks and gardens of special historic interest
Historic England maintains a register of parks and gardens which are of special historic interest. The Southampton parks on this register are Central Parks, Southampton Old Cemetery and Townhill Park.
Development is not permitted which would detract from the character or historic value of these parks. This includes development both within and outside a park which would affect its setting.
The register of Parks and Gardens in Southampton document describes the three registered parks. For more information contact the Conservation Officer

In addition to the national register, the Hampshire Register of Historic Parks and Gardens is a list of parks, gardens and designed landscapes of historic interest, although includes some parks and gardens that no longer exist. For information about those parks and gardens within the City of Southampton, contact the Southampton Historic Environment Record.
Southampton City Council's policy on historic parks and gardens is outlined in the Local Plan (policy HE5).
