Children and young people witnessing abuse
Parents who are experiencing domestic abuse do not always realise how it affects children. They may think the children being in another room, asleep or not seeing what is going on that they will not be affected. We know that living in a home where domestic abuse is happening can be really harmful for children.
The abuse can have a serious impact on a child's behaviour and well being, even if they are not directly harmed.
Domestic abuse can also be a sign that children could be suffering from another type of abuse or neglect.
The effects can last into adulthood. Once the children are in a safer environment, most children are able to recover from the effects of experiencing domestic abuse.
