Southampton Highway Partnership reaches one million hours milestone
Southampton City Council Highways partner Balfour Beatty have reached two major safety milestones this week that demonstrates the impeccable safety culture that the team have embedded across the Partnership. The Southampton team are celebrating a massive 1 million hours worked and 1000 days without a lost time injury
When asking Contract Director Brian Hammersley how this has been achieved, he responded:
“Zero Harm is our absolute priority and focus. This is supported by our four Golden Rules, 10 Fatal Risks most recently, What3Things and a real focus on capturing and acting upon the observations we receive on a daily basis. Safety is at the heart of everything we do. Everyone in the team is clear on our expectations and are empowered and encouraged to stop works if something is not right, whether they work directly for Balfour Beatty, or as part of our wider supply chain family. To put the milestone of a million hours into perspective, it would take a single person working 40 hours a week every week for more than 480 years."
David McCabe, Head of Health and Safety, said:
“It is not by coincidence that these figures have been reached, it has been down to the whole team having a real focus on safety and knowledge of risk, as well as a culture of continuous improvement."
