Southampton City Council receives award: Best Air Quality Strategy - Public Sector

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the ‘Best Air Quality Strategy – Public Sector’ presented by The Westminster Commission for Road Air Quality at this year’s ‘Fleet International Awards’. This achievement highlights our commitment to addressing air quality issues and implementing measures to improve the wellbeing of our residents.

The esteemed award acknowledges our investment in a network of state-of-the-art, low-cost monitors and a new modelling system which effectively tracks air quality across the city. This data is now available here to view. 

The collected data will play a vital role in supporting other initiatives outlined in the Air Quality Action Plan. This includes the upcoming air quality engagement programme, which aims to mitigate the adverse effects of poor air quality on residents through positive behaviour change initiatives.

These efforts will address concerns such as wood burning, air quality around schools, and the well-being of vulnerable residents affected by pollution, with support from the healthcare sector. By better understanding the localised issues through this monitoring and modelling project, both the council and residents can take targeted steps to combat air pollution.

The award was presented by The Westminster Commission for Road Air Quality and accepted by George O’Ferrall, Sustainable Projects Lead (Air Quality) from Southampton City Council, who expressed gratitude for the recognition.
