Southampton City Council launches Warm Welcome Initiative for 2024

Together with Library teams across the city and the ‘Friends of Library’ groups, the Warm Welcome initiative returns from Monday 25 November 2024

All of Southampton’s libraries are registered as warm spaces as part of the wider, nationwide initiative by providing warm, safe spaces and activities in local communities.

This winter, libraries will host over 250 activities aimed at adults, families, and children. During each activity there will also be an opportunity to enjoy a free hot drink and snack. Activities will vary from arts and crafts, reading, and games clubs, and are open to all with no pre-booking.

Pension Credit advice and support

Following the government announcement that the Winter Fuel Payment will only be paid to pensioners receiving certain benefits, libraries will also be offering advice on pension credits through individual appointments.

These 45-minute pre-bookable sessions will help check eligibility and support the completion of the online application process. The Government deadline for applications is Saturday 21 December 2024. Appointments are available in these libraries:

  • Central
  • Shirley
  • Lordshill
  • Woolston
  • Bitterne
  • Portswood

These appointments can be booked online by speaking to a member of library staff either in your local library or via telephone on 023 8083 3007.

Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of Southampton City Council said:

“The Warm Welcome initiative has proven to help people in Southampton and beyond, year after year. The colder months can feel dark, lonely and unsettling for some, but our fantastic Libraries teams and volunteers work hard to ensure that our libraries are warm, safe spaces with plenty to do. Our friendly staff can also help people navigate support available during the winter period.”
