Southampton City Council approves new long term transport strategy, Connected Southampton 2040

Strategy outlines vision for a thriving Southampton

Members of Southampton City Council have voted to approve a new local transport plan setting out the long term strategy for transport in Southampton for the next twenty years.

Connected Southampton – Transport Strategy 2040 outlines our vision for a thriving Southampton where world class transport supports a healthy, sustainable and inclusive city.

It's our ambitious plan of action to transform transport in the city with some big ideas for transport to 2040. These range from introducing Park & Ride and a Southampton Mass Transit System, to making it easier to get around by walking and cycling with Active Travel Zones, completing the Southampton Cycle Network and becoming a Zero Emission City for transport.

Over 1400 people responded to our consultation on the plans last year. This feedback has been used to help inform the final strategy which is now our blueprint to secure a successful future for the city and improve quality of life for everyone.

Connecting Southampton website now live

We’ve launched a new website to coincide with the launch of this new strategy. The ‘Connecting Southampton’ website is available now at transport.southampton.gov.uk. It is a place where residents, commuters and visitors can get the latest news on the major transport projects that are shaping our city. It includes traffic and travel information and detail on the long term vision for transport in Southampton with links to find out more about getting around by public transport, walking and cycling.

Cllr Jacqui Rayment, Cabinet Member for Transport & Public Realm at Southampton City Council, said:

“I’m really excited about working to deliver our plans set out in Connected Southampton 2040. This is a long term strategy that will ensure the city continues to grow and people can get around easily and safely in a clean, green and sustainable way.

“We have listened to the local people that commented on our plans last year. They want us to deliver on our plans for Park & Ride, to improve public transport, to invest in making walking and cycling easier and more attractive, and on making sure our transport system supports the economic growth of Southampton.

“We will be keeping people up to date on how the plans are taking shape via our new website at transport.southampton.gov.uk. It has been designed to make it easy for residents, commuters and visitors to get the latest traffic and travel info and to understand the bigger picture for transport across the city.”
