Southampton City Centre parking tariffs to be reviewed and simplified

Southampton City Council is reviewing how parking tariffs within the city centre can be simplified and will be consulting on this from 1 September

Southampton City Council is reviewing how parking tariffs within the city centre can be simplified. It is proposed that the council’s off-street parking facilities will change to a single charging period of Monday to Sunday 8am to 12midnight, while the on-street pay and display areas will change to a charging period of Monday to Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Unlike other comparable areas, Southampton has not seen an increase to either off-street or on-street parking tariffs in 10 years. The increased tariffs will cover the growing demand for parking services as we see more car journeys into the city for work, study, shopping, and leisure. It will also support public transport in and around the city, as well as highway maintenance and repair including potholes.

Season ticket prices for city centre parking will not be increased at this time but may be subject to review in due course. Consultation for these changes will start on Friday 01 September. Residents can leave their feedback via the website.

Councillor Keogh, the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, states:

“The decision to increase any charges within the city is not taken lightly by the council. Our tariffs need to be more reflective of other similar local authorities, but we believe we have maintained a competitive offer to ensure Southampton City Centre remains an attractive destination for visitors. City centre residents will still have access to reduced priced season tickets, while night-time economy workers can make use of the Overnight Season Ticket, priced at £150 per year. The council needs to cover the increasing costs of providing parking services and any surplus on street revenue will be used for transport, highways and parking projects, including repair of potholes.”
