Southampton celebrates Black History Month this October
Southampton City Council is proud to announce a series of events and initiatives to celebrate Black History Month this October, highlighting the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black communities in the city and beyond
This year’s theme focuses on recognition, reflection, and celebration, providing residents and visitors opportunities to engage with Black history, arts, and culture throughout the month of October.
A key highlight will be Black History Month South’s Colourism Exhibition. In 2024, this powerful exhibition explored the nuances of colourism within the Black community and society at large, encouraging open conversations about identity, beauty standards, and representation. New for 2025, the exhibition will focus on the impact colourism has on younger people. The exhibition will be installed at Southampton Central Library Shirley Library, Woolston Library, Mayflower Studios, Solent University, October Books, Barton Peveril College, and God’s House Tower.
In addition, all Southampton City Council libraries will feature specially curated themed reading lists, showcasing Black authors, stories, and historical accounts to educate and inspire readers of all ages. You can access these reading lists online or speak to your local librarian.
Returning for 2025, the Black Business Arts and Music Festival (BBAM) will take place on Sunday 12 October in Guildhall Square. This vibrant, family-friendly event will celebrate the richness of Black culture through live performances, local talent, food, drink, art, and business showcases. It's a fantastic opportunity to support Black-owned businesses and experience a variety of cultures through music, dance, and cuisine.
Councillor Alex Winning, Leader of Southampton City Council, said:
"Black History Month is an essential part of our city's cultural calendar. It gives us a dedicated time to honour the history, struggles, and successes of Black individuals and communities who have shaped Southampton and the wider world. We are committed to recognising this heritage not just in October, but throughout the year. This year’s programme reflects our city’s diversity and aims to bring people together through education, expression, and shared experience."
