SNG (Sovereign Network Group) and Southampton City Council today officially unveiled a brand new multi-use games area at Aldermoor Park in Lordshill, Southampton

The Sheriff with other attendees at the unveiling

The Sheriff of Southampton cut the ribbon at a special celebratory event held at the new facilities. They were joined by special guests from Sovereign Network Group (SNG), city councillors, local residents and young people from the estate who were all making the most of the improved spaces.

The extensive refurbishment includes two goal ends for football and basketball, fresh court markings surrounded by new fencing with a small outdoor gym next to the games area. Younger residents and their families in Lordshill had told SNG they would love to see better facilities in the park. This led to SNG and Southampton City Council (with local partners providing letters of support) submitting an application to the Veolia Environmental Trust and secured £75K funding. SNG contributed an additional £7,500 to help make the community’s aspirations become a reality and now the park now has a well-equipped multi-use space.

To accompany the new facilities, SNG has also funded a local youth organisation to deliver activities at the games area during the summer holidays to help encourage the local community get involved with positive and healthy activities.

Toby Eaglen, SNG’s Community Investment and Partnerships Lead, said: “These new facilities are a fantastic addition to this incredible open space. We’re really looking forward to watching our community enjoy using what they came together to help create. It’s all been made possible by the result of great partnership working between ourselves, Southampton City Council, local community organisations, and local residents. We’re committed to continuing to work alongside our customers and community partners to improve the wellbeing and quality of life in areas where we have homes and to supporting communities to thrive.”

Councillor John Savage, Cabinet Member for Environment and Net Zero at Southampton City Council, said: “Spaces like these are so important for families in the local area and beyond. The new games area will promote a fun and active lifestyle, and I hope people continue to enjoy the games area and outdoor gym whatever the weather.”
