Southampton provisional GCSE results announced following return to pre-pandemic assessments
This year results from 11 of Southampton’s secondary schools show 75% of Southampton pupils achieved a 9-4 result in GCSE English and 67% achieved a 9-4 result in GCSE maths
Despite what is being reported for the rest of the country, Southampton has seen no marked decline and has maintained its GCSE performance standards.
This is the first year pupils have returned to exam-based assessments rather than the centre assessed grades and teacher-based assessments introduced during the pandemic.
Councillor Darren Paffey, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Learning at Southampton City Council said:
“Congratulations to everyone collecting their results today, you should feel extremely proud of what you have achieved. Every one of you has faced disruption and had to adapt to the challenges the pandemic has created over the past two years on top of the usual pressures at this important stage in life. We are incredibly proud of your achievements.
Also, to all our school staff who have supported them through their secondary school education, thank you for your resilience and determination to ensure your pupils achieve the best they can.
If your results are different to what you were hoping and you don’t know what to do next or you’re reconsidering your next steps, then please know you are not alone. As well as support from your teachers, family and friends, there are support services available to help you. You can visit the Access Southampton and Flying Start Southampton websites for information and advice whether that’s on further education, apprenticeships or employment and training.”
The Southampton City Council website has advice and guidance to support any pupils who may be disappointed with their results or seeking advice on their next steps. Visit results day.
