Proposals to freeze Itchen Bridge concession for residents and increase toll charges for non Southampton residents

Southampton City Council is carrying out a consultation to increase the Itchen Bridge toll charges for non Southampton residents in order to ease congestion. The current charges will remain the same for Southampton residents with a SmartCities card

For Southampton residents without a SmartCities card and non Southampton residents, the tariffs will increase by 20p.

The statutory Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) consultation is live from today, Friday 7 February, for 28 days. People can have their say by visiting Connecting Southampton - Itchen Bridge tolls. The changes will be put in place on Tuesday 1 April 2025 if the decision was made to go ahead following the consultation.

The proposed toll increase will raise additional money to pay for improvements and maintenance on the bridge. A first phase of works will still take place later this year, focusing on the parapet works to install new safety fencing. This will be followed by work to replace the drainage system and resurfacing the bridge.

Councillor Eammon Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said:

“The Itchen Bridge is a key highway asset and link into Southampton, therefore it is important that we can preserve the bridge for future use and manage the demand through review of the toll charges.

“The increase in the toll will contribute to the key upgrade and maintenance and safety works that are planned for later this year.  We will soon be approaching the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Itchen Bridge and there are further works that we will be carrying out to ensure this iconic and strategically important asset can be both celebrated and preserved for future generations.

“The SmartCities card users remain unaffected by the increase and provides discount concessions to our residents so I would encourage residents to sign up to the card to receive the benefits when using the Itchen Bridge."
