Portswood Project Trial: Brookvale Road buildout to be removed

As a result of the feedback received from local people and an interim recommendation from independent road safety auditors, the ‘give way’ priority buildout on Brookvale Road between Winn Road and Blenheim Avenue will be removed overnight on 5 March

Southampton City Council is committed to listening to feedback from local people and businesses to help inform the trial of the Portswood Project. We appreciate local people’s efforts to highlight safety issues which enables us to focus on these areas, and people can continue to send us feedback via the Traffic Regulation Order Consultation page on Connecting Southampton.

As part of our monitoring and evaluation programme, the council commissioned an independent Road Safety Audit which is due to conclude in the week commencing Monday 10 March. After hearing from local people about the ‘give way’ priority buildouts on Brookvale Road, the Audit team has provided interim advice which, together with the feedback from local people, has informed the decision to remove the ‘give way’ priority buildout near the mini roundabout.

We have also been in discussion with Highfield C of E Primary School about road safety and in response to the issues raised we will be lowering the speed limit on Church Lane to 20mph to improve safety for children, parents and others walking, wheeling or cycling in the area.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“We are listening to the feedback that we receive from local people and businesses and while we do need time to gather further evidence and assess the issues raised, we will continue to make adjustments to the trial infrastructure such as at Brookvale Road and also implement new measures such as at Church Lane to address concerns and improve safety.”
