New Chief Executive joins Southampton City Council
Southampton City Council welcomes Jillian Kay this week as the new Chief Executive
Jillian joins at an important time for the council – with a balanced budget for the year ahead, savings and efficiencies being delivered through an ambitious transformation programme, and Devolution and Local Government Reorganisation coming later this year. The council remains focused on delivering for its residents, and a strong, experienced Chief Executive will be crucial in achieving the best for the future.
Jillian’s appointment was confirmed by Full Council in January, following recommendation from the cross-party Chief Officer Employment Panel.
Jillian Kay, new Chief Executive of Southampton City Council, said: “Southampton is a fantastic city, and I am delighted to take on the role at this pivotal moment for the council, the city, and the region. Southampton has a rich history, vibrant culture and bright future and I cannot wait to get started. I love this part of the south coast and it’s brilliant to have city life, the coast and beautiful countryside all within easy reach.
I’m looking forward to working with elected members, partners, residents and businesses to achieve our aspirations for the city, to make a difference to our residents and communities.
With the council going through major transformation, I have already been in touch with the political and executive leadership to ensure that we maintain the direction and energy within the council and become financially sustainable and effective for the future of local government.
With Devolution and Local Government Reorganisation, we have great opportunities to develop the city and the region, as well as to deliver excellent services for residents, businesses and partners in the region.”
Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of the Council, said: “I'm pleased to welcome Jillian to this vital role. Her appointment comes at a pivotal time for Southampton as we advance our ambitious transformation programme – focused on reducing costs, growing our economy and enhancing services for our residents.
Jillian brings a wealth of strategic leadership experience from both local and national government. Her expertise will be invaluable as we continue to modernise our services, improve outcomes for local people and embrace the opportunities presented by the government’s devolution and reform agenda.”
