Five for £5 bus travel continues at weekends throughout October

The successful summer campaign has been extended so more people can travel at a cheaper rate

Over the summer holiday period, Southampton City Council partnered with three local bus operators to offer a discount on group tickets where up to five people could travel around the city all day for just £5.

The offer was initially in place to encourage groups and families to spend time exploring the city during the school summer holidays and make the most of events, shops and restaurants. However, following a huge take-up, the Council has today announced the discount will continue at weekends throughout October.

Cabinet Member for Transport and District Regeneration, Councillor Eamonn Keogh said: “Demand for the 5 for £5 group ticket has been extremely high this summer, with around 23,000 tickets being sold. We’re pleased that people have been taking advantage of the offer and choosing to travel by bus instead of by car.

“We’re extending the offer to cover weekends in October, so that more people can continue to travel at the cheaper rate. We are aware that the cost of living is increasing rapidly and we hope that this will help to ease the cost of transport – especially for families. This transport offer is just one way the Council is helping residents to navigate the financial crisis. I’d urge anyone who is struggling to get in touch with us so we can signpost them to local support services and charities.”

The offer allows groups of up to five people to travel at weekends on Bluestar and Unilink services, City Red services or Southampton Mini Link buses and pay just £5 for the whole day. Each ticket is only valid on the operator's bus service that it was purchased from.

To take advantage of the offer, groups must purchase their tickets on the bus or via the bus company’s app. They must also travel together throughout the day, using the same operator’s services for each journey.
