Southampton City Council launches survey to capture children’s physical activity levels in the city
Southampton parents and carers are being encouraged to share how physically active their babies, toddlers and children are as part of Southampton City Council’s mission to create a healthier Southampton
The council is conducting the survey so they can support parents and carers of children under the age of five with free resources and help broaden the physical activity offer in the city.
Resident’s feedback will also help to form recommendations for how partners across the city can work towards creating positive early opportunities for children to be active as part of the We Can Be Active Strategy, which sets out to inspire and support active lifestyles for all residents across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Dr Debbie Chase, Director of Public Health at Southampton City Council, said: “Being active is good fun and really important for healthy development in the early years. It supports good mental and physical health, including helping children to keep a healthy weight.
“We know that at least three hours of physical activity a day for children under the age of five helps them grow and develop. Whether that’s walking, running or jumping in the park, swimming, riding a bike or even tummy time for little ones - there really is something every child can get involved in!
“Enjoying physical activity is at the heart of good health and wellbeing, which is why we’re committed to driving these opportunities for children in our city.Your feedback will help shape our children’s futures - please take part in the survey and share your views.”
The consultation is open until Sunday 9 November 2025. Take part in the consultation.
Printed surveys are available at council-run libraries. You can also download and post your response to: Consultations, First Floor, West Wing, Civic Centre, Southampton, SO14 7LY.
