Building a bright and sustainable future for St Mary’s Community and Leisure Centre
St Mary’s Community and Leisure Centre is set to benefit from a major £2.5 million investment aimed at refurbishing the facility
The building will be closed from Monday, 31 March. This is a temporary closure to allow for essential repairs, including the replacement of the sports hall roof. The centre is expected to reopen in the autumn.
In addition to the refurbishment work, Southampton City Council has been actively seeking a charity or community-based organisation to take over the management of the centre on a long-term, low-cost lease. The council is currently in discussions with several interested parties, with plans to announce the new operator in the summer. This will ensure the centre remains a key part of the local community and continues to serve its purpose as a hub for leisure, wellbeing, and community activities.
Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of Southampton City Council, said:
“St Mary’s Community and Leisure Centre has been an integral part of the local community for many years, offering a wide range of leisure, wellbeing, and community facilities.
“The upcoming refurbishment is crucial in ensuring the building remains fit for purpose and continues to be a venue where people can visit, exercise, and enjoy for many years to come. As a council, we are committed to maximising the building’s potential and ensuring it continues to support the community for years to come”.
The £2.5 million investment will not only enhance the facilities but also help to safeguard the centre’s future as a vital community asset. The refurbishment will include key improvements, ensuring the building is more energy-efficient, accessible, and better equipped to meet the needs of the local population.
More details about the centre's reopening and the new operator will be shared at a later date.
