A statement from the Leader of Southampton City Council
As many will know, over recent months there have been unauthorised flags placed on public highway assets such as lamp posts and road signs
We recognise and respect the strong desire among our residents to display national pride and identity, and we continue to fly the Union Jack flag and civic flags on our official buildings, however, our paramount duty is to the safety of everyone in Southampton.
As the weather changes, some of these flags have begun to create safety hazards for our community and maintenance contractors. Any item posing an immediate and clear danger is being removed as an urgent priority, and all other illegal attachments will be considered for removal in a timely and structured manner as part of our routine scheduled maintenance schedule.
We strongly urge residents who wish to display flags and show their pride to do so safely and legally on their own private property.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to keep Southampton safe for everyone.
