£1.1m roof replacement work at Oakwood Primary School finishes
Project successfully completed ahead of time and under budget
Despite months of poor weather, the project to replace the roof at Oakwood Primary School was successfully completed this month. Two months ahead of schedule and under budget.
Originally built in the 1970s, Oakwood Primary School consists of eight buildings linked together by connecting flat roofs, other flat roof structures and a connecting corridor. This unique configuration is the result of the former infant and junior schools’ merger in 2014.
Heavy rain caused the aging roof structure to leak in numerous locations, so a detailed condition survey was commissioned. The survey reported that the old concrete tiled pitch and asphalt flat roofs were approaching the end of their design life and needed complete replacement.
The site has now been transformed with new and improved roof coverings. New upgraded thermally efficient insulation has been fitted to all areas, making the school warmer and more energy efficient. Replacement solar panels were installed, and design changes were implemented to improve the efficiency of the roof structure. This included the installation of new roof lights to ensure the site meets all current Building Regulations plus Health and Safety standards.
Thanks to a comprehensive specification, strict site controls and a strong working relationship with the contractor the project was completed ahead of schedule and within budget, with no impact on quality. Latest figures show project savings of approximately £160,000.
Year 6 pupils wrote a letter of thanks to the Project Manager, Dean Mills, stating that the new roof had ‘made a difference to their school life’ and that ‘we really appreciate what you have done for us’.
Dean Mills, Project Manager for Southampton City Council Corporate Estates and Asset Division said:
“I am and always have been passionate in providing high standards for our children within their school environment. I want to make their time in school as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Being able to accomplish this has given me a great sense of pride and satisfaction. I believe if the children enjoy their time in school, they will have the opportunity to learn and go on and achieve great things in anything they wish to pursue.
When you receive a special letter like that, how can you not want to carry on and do more for the children of our schools. With the support of the local authority in Southampton and their outstanding education team, I hope we can continue this great work.”
Councillor Alex Winning, Cabinet Member for Children and Learning said:
“It’s really wonderful to hear the difference the new roof has made to the pupils at Oakwood Primary School. Projects like these are complex to deliver as the buildings need to remain open for learning and safe for the children and staff. To have completed the project early and as a result save money is a real achievement. Thank you to every person who worked tirelessly to do so. The children and Oakwood Primary School now have a space that will provide them with every opportunity to learn and achieve.”
