Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day bunting

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, we are inviting knitters to help us create bunting in red, white, or navy blue using the provided knitting pattern. This project is a wonderful way to honour the bravery and resilience of those who lived through the war and to unite our communities in a shared act of remembrance and creativity.

How you can help

Please use the pennant knitting pattern below with red, navy, or white double knit (DK) yarn and size four millimetre needles. The top edge of the pennant should be about 18 centimetres, and the length should be around 17.5 centimetres. If you prefer to crochet, please make sure the pennant matches the size and shape of the knitted pennants.

A triangle shape with one point downward. It is approximately 17.5 centimetres high and 18 centimetres wide

Pennants can be plain or decorated

Feel free to decorate your pennant with unique touches, using techniques such as embroidery and applique to reflect Southampton's story during World War Two. Ideas include planes, ships, victory symbols, iconic landmarks, or designs honouring a relative who experienced life in Southampton during the war.

Once finished, you can drop off your pennants at any Southampton City library.

Please submit your pennants by Friday 2 May 2025
