Future Makers wanted to shape the future in Southampton.

Southampton is a city of opportunity, ambition and heart, and we’re looking for educators and leaders who are ready to make a lasting impact.

We’re proud to be home to a high percentage of ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Good’ schools, alongside respected colleges and universities. In 2023, Ofsted recognised Southampton City Council’s Children and Learning service as ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding leadership’, a testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation in education.

But Southampton is more than just a place to work. It’s a vibrant, diverse port city with a rich maritime heritage and a bold vision for the future. Our communities are alive with culture, creativity, and connection. From global cuisines to music from every corner of the world, our children and young people grow up in an environment that celebrates difference and inspires ambition.

This is an exciting time to live and work in Southampton. We’re building a city that puts children and young people at the centre, listening to their voices, empowering their choices, and preparing them to lead tomorrow.

Join us. Inspire. Listen. Lead. Together.

Future Makers: Teaching assistants (or learning support assistants)

Teaching assistants

Assistants provide valuable additional support to students in classrooms throughout the city. With an eye for detail and an ability to adapt to different teaching and learning styles, our teaching assistants are incredibly important to us. If helping children and young people to get the most from their education is something you strive to achieve, think Southampton.

Future Makers: Administration

Administration

No school could operate successfully without administration teams! Managing everything from school lunches to trips, arranging paperwork to help students transition from one school to the next, signing in visitors on reception, a real powerhouse in organisation! If you’re a whizz with people, tasks and all things school, think Southampton.

Future Makers: Support staff

Support staff

Without cleaning, maintenance, catering and playground staff, no school could run effectively. These unsung heroes keep our schools clean and tidy as well as fed and safe at breaktimes! So, if you’re handy with a hammer, serious with a spatula or perfect with a plunger, think Southampton.

Future Makers: School traffic patrol

School traffic patrol

We take road safety seriously. To make sure the routes to schools are as safe as possible we employ school traffic patrol officers. Our incredible staff are there, rain or shine, to guide children, young people and their families safely across roads at drop-off and pick-up times. So if teaching young children the importance of road safety drives you on, think Southampton.

Making a difference

Teaching in Southampton is more than a career - it’s a chance to make a meaningful impact in a city where your work truly matters.

Southampton is a vibrant, diverse city with a strong commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people. We know that great teachers change lives, especially in communities facing the greatest challenges. That’s why we’re looking for passionate educators who want to make a difference where it counts most.

  • Explore the data: Southampton’s Data Observatory offers rich insights into education outcomes, community needs, and local demographics. You can dive deeper into Education Outcomes and Inequality Profiles to understand the context in which our schools operate.
  • Child Friendly Southampton: We’re working towards becoming a more child friendly city where children’s voices shape the services and spaces around them. Join us in building a city where every child can thrive.
  • Tackling inequality: In 2025 Southampton ranks 55th out of 317 local authorities for deprivation, with 19 neighbourhoods among the 10% most deprived in England. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity – to be part of a team that’s committed to equity, inclusion, and improving life chances for all.
