Meet the future housing professionals

Five young people are kickstarting their careers in housing thanks to our apprenticeship scheme. They will benefit from gaining hands-on experience whilst working towards a recognised qualification in order to become the next generation of housing professionals

Recently three apprentice Neighbourhood Wardens and two apprentice Housing Management officers started work alongside our professional team of council staff learning skills from home maintenance to office administration. The young apprentices have the unique opportunity to earn while they learn, gaining a college qualification while developing practical skills and knowledge on the job.

Current Neighbourhood Warden apprentice Phoebe says:

“Being able to earn a living while studying for a qualification is such a good idea. I’m really enjoying gaining practical hands-on skills, such as carrying out the block inspection, completing the weekly fire alarm test and working with residents to improve the neighbourhood. It’s really useful to see the things you are learning in action. My colleagues are very supportive and always happy to give help and advice.”

Senior Warden Russell explains the many benefits of the apprenticeship scheme:

“As well as helping these young people to launch a successful career and look forward to a bright future, the apprenticeship initiative helps us as a council to foster a new pool of skilled workers, which will in turn benefit our communities. By investing in the next generation of housing professionals we aim to ensure our communities are well-served by knowledgeable and capable individuals. The apprentices will play a key role in helping to develop the overall quality of our future housing service and further improve community satisfaction.”

The apprentices receive:

  • A wage and holiday pay
  • Hands-on experience working alongside our housing staff
  • Opportunities to learn job-specific skills
  • Time for training and study
  • A qualification equivalent to A Levels or a degree at the end of the apprenticeship
