Tenants commemorate Victory in Europe (VE) anniversary

Last month’s VE Day commemorations included some special events in our supported housing schemes involving tenants with personal memories of the day that peace was declared in 1945.

Residents at Medwall Court in Thornhill enjoyed a 1940s-themed cream tea to mark the occasion. Local volunteers decorated the community room with bunting and union jacks to bring back memories of the VE parties that were held 80 years ago. Organiser and local resident George who helps to run the Medwall Court Games and Social Club, said the afternoon was a huge success:

“It was great to get people together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, including a couple of our residents who were children when peace was declared in 1945 and can remember the celebration street parties that took place then. It was a lovely opportunity for people to reminisce. We enjoyed 1940s music and tucked into a lovely cream tea with scones baked by Margaret, one of our volunteers.

“The social club runs regular activities including games nights and film screenings. All the activities include refreshments and are open to Medwall Court residents and anyone over 50 in the wider community. Annual membership costs just £5 which gives a discounted price for every activity and members enjoy a free Christmas meal, Easter egg and Easter lunch. It’s a definite bargain! We are a really friendly social club and welcome anyone who would like to meet new friends and socialise, to come and join in the fun.”

Over in Sholing, members of The Pleasant View Social Club marked the VE anniversary with a party in the communal room in Orpen Road. Tenants came together to join in a nostalgic singalong and watch a film about the war, before enjoying a ‘war themed’ buffet including spam sandwiches! Treasurer of the social club Mick says it was a brilliant day:

“Everyone had a really great time and asked if we can do it all again! The social club is open to anyone in the Sholing area, and as well as social nights, parties and seasonal events, we also organise coach holidays and day trips out. Please get in touch if you live locally and would like to join in any of our activities.”
