Local kids’ activities to enjoy this August

There are lots of fun family activities taking place this August across our council neighbourhoods – and the good news is they won’t cost you a penny. So, no need for the kids to be bored this summer, just read on to find out what’s happening near you.

If your child is eligible for free school meals, simply sign up to The Holiday Activities Fund Programme and they can take part in a wide range of free activities taking place right across the city. From childcare clubs that support daily routines to outdoor adventures like kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding, and visits to the farm, there’s something for everyone. Enjoy sports, boxing, creative arts, and so much more in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment. Each child will also receive a free healthy lunch. Spaces are limited so register and book online now.

Our Family Hub teams are organising free family events in local green spaces with lots of play activities for children aged 0-5 and a free raffle. Older children are also welcome, but all children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be fruit and water for children to snack on and musical shaker making. Join in the fun at:

  • Golden Grove - Wednesday 6 August at Albion Towers play area, Ascupart Street between 1pm and 2.30pm.
  • Thornhill - Wednesday 13 August on Hinkler Green between 1pm and 2.30pm.
  • Millbrook - Wednesday 20 August at Mansel Park between 1pm and 2.30pm.

Family Hubs are open as normal throughout the summer holidays, running sessions including Support, Play and Learn Together, Bumps and Babies and Time 4 Play. There are also free programmes for parents to learn new skills from healthy meal planning to infant massage. Check the full timetable of play sessions and parenting programmes online.

Youth Options are holding a community event at Mansel Park in Millbrook on 16 August between 11am and 3pm (which will be rescheduled to the 23 August if the weather is bad). There will be information stands from local organisations and services, to promote what goes on locally. Local residents will be able to find out about a wide range of activities they would like to try or get involved in and have a go at a variety of hands-on activities.
