Community payback takes root in Thornhill

Neighbourhood Wardens have joined forces with the Youth Justice Service to replant a memorial garden in Thornhill.

The initiative was part of the community payback system, which offers children and young people reparation opportunities by carrying out voluntary work in local communities. In this instance the young person spent several days working alongside Neighbourhood Wardens to clear and replant several flower beds outside the entrance to Dumbleton Towers.

Funding for the plants came from the council’s Decent Neighbourhoods Fund and the blooms were sourced from Mayfield Nursery – a not for profit garden centre that supports mental health charity MIND UK.

As Senior Neighbourhood Warden Ray explains the project was an opportunity for the child involved to reflect on the impact of their actions, whilst helping to improve the local area.

“This project is a great example of how Housing services can support children in the youth justice service to learn new skills and give back to the community. These kinds of initiatives play a vital role in reducing reoffending, while also delivering real benefits to local neighbourhoods.

“We were especially mindful of the significance of the flower beds which had been originally planted to serve as a memorial to past Thornhill residents. The gardening work was carried out with care and respect, to ensure the original plants will continue to thrive alongside the new additions.

“We hope residents will enjoy and take pride in this refreshed space which will enhance the appearance of the block for years to come.”

Another community payback project has taken place in St Mary’s where young adults have been busy clearing footpaths, tidying verges, painting fences and removing graffiti. It is part of a joint initiative with the local housing team, police and probation service to make the area feel safer and more appealing for local residents, whilst enabling individuals to give back to the community.
