Become a reading volunteer this summer

Our libraries are on the lookout for young people to become reading volunteers this summer. It’s a fun way to gain work experience and new skills, whilst encouraging children to keep reading during the holidays

If you are aged between 14-25 and can commit to joining a two hour session each week for a minimum of four weeks this summer, please get in touch and apply to be a reading volunteer. Alternatively just pop into your local library to ask for an application form. The closing date for applications is Saturday 14 June, 2025.

We’re looking for volunteers to lend a hand throughout the Summer Reading Challenge period which runs from 5 July-30 August 2025. We appreciate that younger volunteers may not be available weekdays until the school term finishes - this isn’t a problem, just let us know in your application.

As a summer reading volunteer you will help library staff:

  • Join children in the Summer Reading Challenge
  • Talk to children about their books
  • Hand out stickers and rewards
  • Help with summer activities

If you are aged 16 and over you will need a Disclosures and Barring Service (DBS) check, but a member of library staff will contact you to discuss what documentation is needed.

And if you would like to join in our Summer Reading Challenge and earn rewards as you read, check out our next issue for more details on how to take part. You can set your own goals and read anything you like. It’s free to take part and a great way to keep busy during the holidays, and will help ensure you are ready for a great start to the new term in September.
