Find out more about a career in the marine industry

If this month’s Southampton International Boat Show whets your appetite for a career in the marine industry, then pop along to a free careers and apprenticeship event on Tuesday 23 September 2025. Taking place at the Voco hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn) from 4-7pm, it will be a chance to meet marine employers and find out how to get into the industry.

Play Day success

Our team of Junior Neighbourhood Wardens are celebrating the success of this year’s Play Day event, which took place in Hoglands Park earlier in the summer. Over 2,400 people attended, taking part in lots of free, fun outdoor activities designed to promote health, wellbeing, and community.

Play Day was just the latest initiative in a year-round programme packed with free activities for Junior Neighbourhood Wardens. Find out more about the free scheme for 7 to 12 year olds and apply online.

Zero Waste Week

Zero Waste Week starts today and lasts until 7 September. It’s a great excuse to make one small change and stick with it. Try a fridge-first dinner before you shop, carry a refill bottle, repair-before-you-replace, or donate usable items instead of binning them.

In Southampton, recycling is simple, focus on the six: paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, metal food tins, aluminium cans, and aerosols. Keep items clean and dry and, if you’re unsure as to whether an item can be recycled, leave it out to avoid contamination. Explore Zero Waste Week’s dedicated website to find out more.

Emergency alert test this month

A national test of the emergency alert system (which is used by the Government and emergency services to warn of situations like wildfires or floods) will happen this month. If your mobile phone or tablet is compatible you will hear a loud siren-like sound and your device will vibrate for 10 seconds on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm. Don’t worry, you don’t need to take any action, it is just a test of the system.
