Future of Work
Cities of Learning
The council has teamed up with the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce to deliver a pioneering initiative to ensure our residents have the skills needed to be pro-active in addressing economic, climate and societal challenges. Our partnership has generated several outputs, including:
- Developing a set of citywide economic scenarios to facilitate conversations on the future of work, how local partners could respond and building capacity for individuals to conduct ‘future-casting’ activities
- Establishing a skills framework for the city that sets out in-demand and prospective skills sought from employers that inform workforce planning, workforce development and training provision. This is currently being refreshed to examine key sectors – digital, logistics, maritime, and retail - and examining cross-cutting themes on green skills and leadership
- Developing an interactive digital platform to connect resident pathways – using digital badges - from skills, lifelong learning, and employment support to local job and apprenticeship opportunities. This will:
- Transform lifelong learning provision by making it visible and accessible to all
- Develop a resident workforce ready for the changing world of work
- Encourage a sense of place, identity, and ambition in the city
