Advice for the River Itchen

The River Itchen is experiencing high levels of E. coli contamination. In light of this concerning development, we strongly advise against entering and allowing pets in or near the river until further notice.

Although E. coli is typically harmless when found in the guts of humans and mammals, exposure to higher-than-normal levels can pose severe health risks. This bacterium is commonly found in sewage, animal waste, and runoff, and can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses and infections if consumed or exposed to through contaminated water. It is important to avoid recreational activities in areas where E. coli contamination is present, to minimise health risks associated with exposure.

Precautionary measures to minimise risks when coming into contact with open water:

  • Cover all cuts, grazes, and blisters with waterproof dressings before entering the water
  • Wash hands regularly, especially before eating
  • Clean all exposed wounds thoroughly after contact
  • Avoid swallowing water and seek medical attention if ingestion occurs
  • Wear suitable footwear to prevent direct contact with contaminated water when launching or recovering boats
  • Clean equipment thoroughly after each use to remove potential contamination
  • Refrain from drinking water from the river under any circumstances
  • Never drink the water from the river
