Filthy properties
If a property has got into such as bad state that conditions could be dangerous to health, it can be classified as filthy and verminous under the 1936 Public Health Act.
Properties classified like this may have an infestation of vermin (rats, mice, insects or parasites, including their eggs, larvae and pupae) or be in such a filthy state (with large amounts of rotting food inside them, for example) that they are damaging to health.
Such properties frequently also have an accumulation of material that can make access to the premises difficult and present a risk to the occupants of the property, or their neighbours.
Occupants of such a property may have let it fall into a filthy or verminous state because they are having difficulty looking after themselves. Working with other agencies and services, we are able to offer support to people in this situation.
If you are concerned about the welfare of vulnerable adults or children contact us using the relevant safeguarding agencies.
We do not investigate premises that are merely unsightly, untidy or in a bad state of repair, but if a property is filthy and/or verminous report your concerns to us using the form below.
