Available from the local studies library

  • Mercantile Navy Lists. 1857 - 1976: This source contains similar information to Lloyd's Register, but only covers British ships. Importantly, it includes ships of fewer than 100 tons, which are usually excluded from Lloyd's
  • Board of Trade enquiries into Wrecks. 1876 - 1972: These volumes contain reports of enquiries into British ship wrecks in a given year
  • Other registers include Talbot Booth's Merchant Ships, and its successor Jane's Merchant Ships and Lloyd's Register of Yachts
  • Information on the Titanic

Where to go for research - our archives and collections

Local Studies and Maritime Library: access books, periodicals, newspapers, directories, maps and illustrations. Sources are reference only, but others in the main library collection can be borrowed. There is study space and staff available to answer enquiries.

Archives: for a wide range of original (rather than printed) sources on Southampton, dating from 1199 onwards. All the material is for reference only and must be consulted in the reading room.

Maritime and local collections: these collections include objects that show how people lived, dressed, worked, travelled and entertained themselves. There are substantial collections of photographs, paintings, drawings and prints.

Sources for the history of local trades and professions SHOW
