Household Canvass

The Household Canvass is a process the council undertakes every year to update the Electoral Register. It takes place between July and November. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) has a legal duty to ensure that the information we hold is accurate. The ERO also needs to keep the register of eligible voters up to date.

From July 2025, we will contact every property in the city to find out if there are any changes to the household. This is so we can invite new occupants to register to vote and remove those people who no longer live there.

In previous years this contact has been by post. However, in view of increasing costs, this year we are also using email. The type of communication you receive from us will depend on the contact information we hold for your address.

By completing the registration process, you will ensure that you and any other members of your household are entitled to vote at upcoming elections.

Do not delay. Respond to the canvass communication promptly after you have received it. This will save time, reduce costs, and avoid receiving reminders or personal visits.

Please note: Emails from the Electoral Registration Officer will only be sent from the address southamptoncc@public.govdelivery.com.

They will look like the example below.

Respond to the Canvass online

You are required by law to respond to the annual canvass if asked to do so. The quickest way to do this is online and it only takes a few minutes. Complete the following steps:

  • Click the link in the email or the button below to visit the Household Response website
  • The communication you receive contains two security codes. Enter your postcode and both security codes on the website to access your household details
  • Make any necessary changes and click ‘Submit’

Only one response per household is required. We will send reminders to any households where we do not receive a response.
