GOV.UK provide guidance on 'How to register as a childminder or nanny'. From the 1 November 2024, childminders now have the option to register as a 'childminder without domestic premises', meaning they can work solely from somewhere other than a home, such as a village hall, school, an office building, or an outdoor area. They can also register to become a 'childminder on domestic premises'.
Learn more about theChildminder grants scheme. These grants will be available from Autumn 2023 for childminders registered from 15 March 2023 onwards.
New childminders who wish to apply for the grant will need to finalise their Ofsted or Childminder Agency (CMA) registration by 31 March 2025. New childminders must apply for the grant within two months of confirmation of their childminder registration date.
The Department of Education recognises that in some circumstances childminder registration may be delayed due to registration checks taking longer than expected (for example, GP health checks). For this reason, an applicant who submits their registration to Ofsted or a CMA by 3 January 2025 will still be eligible to apply for the grant if completion of their registration is delayed beyond 31 March 2025 for reasons relating to the completion of registration checks. In which case, Ofsted or your CMA should confirm that your registration with them has been delayed for these reasons.
Note: Applicants who begin their registration with Ofsted or a CMA after 3 January 2025 will still be eligible to apply for the grant as long as they finalise registration prior to 31 March 2025.
PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) has a section on their website which features advice and information on becoming a childminder, as well as tips and testimonials from existing childminders along with a video highlighting the benefits of home childcare.
What would I be doing?SHOW
As a childminder in Southampton you may be caring for babies, children or young people on a daily or weekly basis. You will be providing play opportunities that develop and engage the younger children through activities in the home, visits to the park, the local childminder drop-in and other pre-school activities. Childminders often pick up and drop off school age children and also provide a fun and safe place for them in school holidays.
You must have a good knowledge of child development and the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. You must have a good understanding of safeguarding and have the welfare of children as your highest priority. For young children you will carry out observations and assessments of the child's progress if they are aged 0-5 years.
What fees do I charge parents?SHOW
Register for government funding for early years children. Parents of school age children can also use Tax Free Childcare and other support to help pay for your service.
As a professional childminder running your own business, you will be in control of the fees you charge parents. You can look at the records of childminders in your area in our directory to see the fees they charge, to give you a starting point.
We recommend you complete a Pre-registration Childminding Course, you must do an approved 12-hour paediatric first aid course, and obtain knowledge of local safeguarding procedures
Childminders must have completed training which helps them to understand and implement the EYFS before they can register with Ofsted or a childminder agency. Examples of training providers below are not a recommendation, but have provided suitable training for childminders in the past:
You must undertake continuous professional development throughout your childminding work. The Early Years and Childcare team can advise with this
