Keep your home dry and mould free
Mould is caused by condensation which can make your home feel damp, but there are simple ways that you can stop this happening just by improving ventilation and reducing steam around your home. It’s important that you try the tips below before you request work from us. Often, simply by making a few changes to your daily routine you can effectively tackle the problem of mould and reduce condensation.
- Regularly wipe condensation away from walls and windowsills
- Open windows each morning for at least 15 minutes
- Reduce steam by always keeping the door closed and opening windows when you’re cooking, showering and running a bath
- Always use the cooker hood or extractor fan (if you have one) when cooking and always keep lids on pans when you’re cooking
- Run the cold tap first when you fill the bath, then top up with hot water.
- Move furniture away from walls so there is a gap to allow air flow
- Avoid drying laundry indoors (if you really have to dry it inside keep it in one room with the door closed and a window open)
- You can also try using an electric dehumidifier to take the moisture out of the air and help dry out your home. If you see black mould on the walls or window frames carefully wipe it away with diluted bleach or a fungicidal wash (which you can buy from DIY stores). Remember to wear rubber gloves.
