Exciting times ahead thanks to new community hub at Drummond Court

Residents at Drummond Court in Itchen can come together to enjoy the warmer weather thanks to a new summerhouse which has recently been installed in the community garden

The project has been masterminded by local residents who are members of the Dahlia Gardening Club (which covers Drummond Court as well as the blocks of flats on nearby Lower Mortimer Road). The club wanted an indoor space to hold community events and craft sessions and so members applied for a grant from the Travis Perkins Social Value Fund.

They were successful to the tune of £9000 and used the grant funding to buy and install an insulated summerhouse which can be used as a community hub all year round. It now takes pride of place in the community garden, which is lovingly maintained by green fingered residents. The peaceful garden, which was once an ugly, unused drying area now boasts lots of colourful planters, tubs of flowers and a seating area.

Drummond Court resident and Block Representative Shirley says the summerhouse will benefit the whole community:

“Although the community garden is lovely, there was nowhere for neighbours to come together all year round, especially in the wet weather. We are absolutely delighted with the new summerhouse which has been kitted out with furniture and equipment that has been kindly donated. We are already planning to run weekly craft events inside to bring our community together, and I am sure it will make a big difference to this neighbourhood!”
