A clean streak for Junior Neighbourhood Wardens

Our teams of Junior Neighbourhood Wardens know all about the importance of looking after our communities – and now they’re working with pupils at St Mary’s Primary School to launch a weekly litter picking group.

Together with our Waste and Recycling teams, and thanks to generous sponsorship from council contractor CLC (who have supplied high-vis tabards and litter-picking equipment), the initiative will run as a pilot project for one year. It aims to raise the children’s awareness of environmental issues and recycling, whilst promoting citizenship and building pride in their local area. And as the pupils will be out exercising and litter picking, the school will be incorporating this into their Healthy Living scheme.

Participants on the supervised litter picks will also be encouraged to keep an eye out for issues such as graffiti or damage as they walk around the neighbourhood. The school will then report back any issues to the council so they can be investigated and resolved.

The pilot project has been organised by the council’s Junior Neighbourhood Warden scheme, and if successful, it is hoped to roll out the litter-picking initiative to other schools and introduce more weekly walking groups of pupils across the city.
